Shappell's shooting boosts Coal City; Major lifts JCA
COAL CITY — Karla Shappell wasn't perfect — but darn close.
Shappell made all 4 of her shots and scored 22 points in Coal City High School's 52-30 girls basketball victory over Serena on Thursday night.
Shappell made 3-of-4 3-pointers and 5-of-8 free throws. She also had 3 steals and 2 assists.
Kirsten Verdun added 7 points for the Coalers (2-0).
"I thought we played well," Coal City coach Brad Schmitt said. "That was a very aggressive team, and we matched up with them well. We played a much better second half, and I was glad all the girls contributed."
JCA 48, Rich South 45 — At Joliet, Lindsey Major led the Angels (1-0) with a team-high 15 points. Sophomore Katie Hickey added 10 points.
Seneca 42, Somonauk 25 — At the Somonauk Tournament, the Irish (3-0) remained unbeaten with the easy non-conference win. Jalea Berg had 15 points for Seneca, which built a 25-14 halftime lead and a 34-17 lead after three quarter.
"Defensively, we made something happen," Seneca coach Barb Beck said. "I would have liked to see us convert more in transition as a result of the turnovers."
Seneca forced Somonauk into 31 turnovers.
Ridgewood Baptist 51, Twin City Christian (Wis.) 51-15 — At the Northland Tournament, Carly Craven had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Rams (2-0) as they began tournament play. Jessica Menard had 16 points and 7 boards.
Kendra Connor added 6 assists for Ridgewood Baptist, which plays at 1:30 p.m. today in semifinal action.
Ottawa 49, Morris 39 — At the Pontiac Tournament, turnovers and the lack of rebounding handicapped Morris (1-2). Ottawa outrebounded the Redskins 36-17 and forced 31 turnovers.
Christina Roesel scored a team-high 15 points for Morris, which trailed 20-17 at halftime. Kristen Lutz and Rochelle Claire each had 7 points. The Redskins face Mahomet-Seymour at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
Marist 77, Minooka 42 — At the Rolling Meadows/Glenbard South Tournament, senior Aerial Young led the Indians (0-2) with 8 points. Jackie Selfride and Lauren Kijowski each had 6 points.
Marist owned a 38-14 halftime lead.
"They have won the Morris Shootout the past two years, and they are a quick, strong and great shooting basketball team," Minooka coach Ray Liberatore said. "On a positive note for us, all 12 players scored."
Gardner-South Wilmington 52, Wilmington 47 — At Wilmington, Brittani Martin scored 14 points to pace the Panthers (2-0). Laura Lenzie added 13.
"We got off to a slow start in the first quarter," GSW coach Angie Tjelle said. "We were able to battle back and take over the lead by the half despite foul trouble.
"Once again, it was an all-out effort by all 9 girls. Laura Lenzie hit some key shots in the fourth quarter. Those shots, along with key free throws from Kara (Doglio), Ashley (Bozue) and Lisa (Male) helped us finish strong."
Krista Gruca scored 17 points to pace the Wildcats (0-1). Gruca also had 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Tara Spell chipped in 14 points and 16 rebounds. Amanda Chamberlin had 7 points and 8 rebounds.
