A dozen area entries in state meet
The Lincoln-Way East High School will send the largest area contingent to the Girls State Swimming and Diving Meet today and Saturday at Evanston.
The preliminaries are on tap today, with the consolation finals and finals scheduled Saturday.
East finished second among eight teams in the Homewood-Flossmoor Sectional last Saturday. The Griffins' 200 medley relay team of Alyssa Toland, Rachel Japp, Laura Cempel and Erin Reilly won in a time of 1:50.51.
Reilly, a senior, advanced to the state meet with a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.09. That sends her to state as the No. 6 seed based on sectional times.
Cempel advanced with a first place in the 100 butterfly (:59.16) while teammate Kara Nowakowski won the 500 freestyle in 5:19.04.
Also making state were Japp with a second place in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.20) and Cempel via a second-place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:11.08).
Central's Stacy Wymer was second in the 100 backstroke (59.41) and advanced as the No. 10 seed. She also advanced in the 200 IM (third, 2:13.78)
In the Lockport Sectional, the Porters placed third among five teams. Sandburg won with 272.
Lockport freshman Courtney Pope won two events — the 200 freestyle (1:58.70) and the 500 freestyle (5:14.48) to reach state in both.
The Porters' Alex Green, a junior, won the 50 freestyle (:24.75) to punch her ticket to state.
Joliet Township sophomore Taylor Birsa will compete in two events at state as she won the 200 IM (2:13.07) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.26).
Providence Catholic senior diver Katie Boucher was second with 347.05 points and advanced as an at-large qualifier.
