If you didn't know the whole story, you'd never have guessed by the way Becka Gonyo

played basketball in Grant High's season opener that the 6-foot-4 senior center hadn't played in a game in two seasons.

After missing all of her junior year due to illness, Gonyo came out on fire in her first game as a senior, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 boards in the Bulldogs' 77-27 wipeout of Elgin High in a non-conference girls game.

Grant's next action will be tonight in the prestigious Deerfield tournament.

"I'm really happy for her," said Grant coach Tom Oeffling.

"Because she missed a whole year, she was super-nervous. Still, she had a real nice game."

Oeffling was pleased with the play of Autumn Gaylor,

who was a tower of power on the glass with a game-high 14 rebounds.

Jamie Swanson

had 11 points, Heather Sutherland

12 and Heather Ruetsche

10 for the winners, who outscored Elgin 41-11 in the second half.
